ANDRES SERRANO

Looking at Andres Serrano's art is like swearing in front of a 6th grader... the guilt eats at you but sometimes you just have to do it.  In celebration of the polarizing photographer's smug mug on this month's cover of L'Uomo Vogue, a collection of my favorite Serranos.  His is a visual language that is as banal as it is raw, explicitly diffusing from Serrano's strict Roman Catholic upbringing.  Works such as "Piss Christ" facilitate the mashup of religious symbolism and human waste that has become pretty de mode, although the treatment (no digital retouching) lends a poetic grit.
