SATIN CHIC
Remember that brief period at the brink of the 90's when Disney and Lisa Frank and that movie Cool World and Florida tourism advertising all seemed to drink from the same graphic bowl of spiked fruit punch? Mat Maitland, the brilliant/prolific art director at London's Big Active works that aesthetic hard. Besides collaborating on award-winning album art for the likes of Goldfrapp, Basement Jaxx, Coldplay, White Lies and Michael Jackson, Maitland dizzies up L'Officiel with his mesmerizing collages that are like if Roy Lichtenstein and Lisa Frank drank blue slushies on a Tilt-A-Whirl and threw up babies.

DoGGoNe CrAzY
There was a dog show this weekend in New Jersey, that wasn't your typical high-brow Westminster affair...
It was fun! Festivities included shopping, facials and of course tarot readings. I mean, how often is your pup treated to a day of Jersey-style F.U.N.?
There was also a creative grooming contest. Oh man, I'm having flashes of Sandy Paws. Anyway, this one is supposed to be a dragon.
Don't believe me? Look closer..
Huh. How about that? Or this one, a sad angel, which is a little somber for my taste. I mean, talk about a downer..

This next one is allegedly a ''canine-sized seahorse'' but I don't get it. At all. I also don't work for the Times so maybe someone there can talk me through it.

Next is the Mad Hatter and he placed in third; which I am assuming has something to do with the random googly eye on his haunch.

My favorite! Simple, chic, Vogue.
ANDRES SERRANO
Looking at Andres Serrano's art is like swearing in front of a 6th grader... the guilt eats at you but sometimes you just have to do it. In celebration of the polarizing photographer's smug mug on this month's cover of L'Uomo Vogue, a collection of my favorite Serranos. His is a visual language that is as banal as it is raw, explicitly diffusing from Serrano's strict Roman Catholic upbringing. Works such as "Piss Christ" facilitate the mashup of religious symbolism and human waste that has become pretty de mode, although the treatment (no digital retouching) lends a poetic grit.
